Keeping the Elderly from Falling with Cinergy Health

Certainly, some accidents can’t be avoided; some, however, can be. The more that you prepare a home for a senior and try to ensure a safe environment, the more chance there is that the senior won’t end up falling. Here, Cinergy Health & Life Insurance Agency offers key suggestions to help the elderly to prevent falls.

Make sure that your loved one has regular visits to a physician so that you’ll know if they are at high risk for falls. Their medication should also be monitored by a doctor at all times. Make sure to periodically access the living environment for your loved one and identify problems. Problems could include throw rugs, electrical cords, clutter and even furniture.

Make sure to have a specific system for communicating so that your loved one can contact you if an emergency occurs. You can buy a medical alert system or designate a specific friend or family member to check in on them regularly. You should also have a plan in place for gaining entry to their home in case they have fallen and can’t get to the door.

Cinergy Health Examines Longevity Study

According to a recently done longevity study, the United States is losing ground as compared to other developed countries in the life expectancy statistics for their aging population.  The report, from the National Research Council, which is a part of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, reports that for the past 25 years life expectancy in the U.S for people age 50 has indeed increased, but more slowly than in almost all of the other 21 countries included in the study.

These results are even more striking since the US spends more money on health care than any other country. As one of the authors of the study commented, “The results are surprising in terms of our self-concept.”

The reason for these less than hoped for life expectancy figures is obesity and high rates of smoking among Americans.  The co-author of the study, Samuel Preston of the University of Pennsylvania explained.

“We determined the most likely source of our shortfall is cigarette smoking, particularly the heavy amount of smoking done by American women,” he said.

“Obesity also appears to be important, but we are less certain of its role,” he added. “We are the heaviest country in the Western world.”

Cinergy Health encourages people to see the health trends today in the U.S. and try and make the necessary changes to improve their health. As this study shows, losing weight and quitting smoking can help people live longer, have less health complaints and live healthier.

Cinergy Health Says Treat Strep Throat with Antibiotics

The winter is here and it is once again taking its toll on our health and the health of our children.  Cinergy Health would like to explore with you the issue of taking care to always diagnose and treat strep throat.

Strep throat is a common illness caused by a bacterial infection. Most of the time if strep is untreated it will go away by itself in a few days. The policy today, however, is to not let strep run its course and resolve on its own. That is because untreated strep can sometimes lead to other, more serious illnesses.

The streptococcus bacteria, which are the bacteria responsible for the development of strep throat, can spread to other parts of the body, infecting the middle ear, the sinuses, and other areas.  Another effect of untreated strep is a rare immune response which tells the body’s immune system to attack its own healthy tissues; in some cases rheumatic fever can develop as a result.

Cinergy Health recommends treating strep in a timely and appropriate manner to avoid complications and/or the further spread of this common but potentially dangerous illness.

Winter Myths Debunked: Cinergy Health

Winter is the time for catching cold and flu and other cold season bugs. It is also the time for the dispensing of lots of advice for how to prevent those colds from coming on. But it is important to separate fact from fiction and learn how to really stay healthy in winter.

That’s why Cinergy Health, an innovative company finding ways for Americans to receive affordable, high quality health care coverage, would like to help you debunk the winter myths.

1.   You’ll get sick if you don’t bundle up.  This is a good idea for other reasons – but not for that one. There is no scientific connection between exposure to cold and winter bugs.

2.   Most of your body heat is lost through your head.  Modern research shows that at most 10% of heat loss comes from the head.

3.   Taking Vitamin C will keep you well. “C” is a good vitamin to be taking – but there is not yet conclusive proof that it will keep you from getting sick this winter.

Where Are Those Calories Coming From?

If you feel like your weight is getting a little out of hand, but don’t feel that a full-blown diet is necessary, you may choose to just watch what you consume throughout the course of your day. You cut back on chocolate, fattening cheeses, fried foods and the like, and yet you see no significant difference. You have made one big mistake: you have failed to cut back on the majority of the calories you consume daily. Drinks like coffee, soda, alcoholic beverages and even fruit juices can contain over 500 calories! These liquid calories do nothing to eliminate your hunger, and so they “don’t count” in your daily count, but they certainly should. By eating low-fat foods alongside a high-calorie drink, you are doing very little for your diet. With that said, it is important to understand that dieting is a complicated, personalized matter. For that reason, you should always consult a specialist before making any dramatic changes in your diet. Cinergy Health and similar companies work to provide affordable, personalized health care and advice, including in situations like these.

Avoiding the Flu: Cinergy Health

The start of the winter season heralds many things, including football, holidays, school and unfortunately the flu. Why not use the slow beginning of the season to your advantage? While the days are still relatively warm, there are many types of exercises and activities that can help boost your immune system as well as improve your general health. A healthy diet is also a key factor in your immune system’s performance. The days have gotten shorter, but your sleep pattern should not have. Use the extra night time hours to add more sleep to your schedule. People who are sleep deprived are more likely to catch the flu. Ask your doctor from Cinergy Health or another company about getting the flu shot. This can be an effective way to avoid the flu throughout the entire winter season. This shot is not suitable for everyone, so it is important to consult with a doctor before getting it done.

As the season truly begins, the flu gets more and more common. It is spread in school, on the subway, on the bus, at work and in other public areas. It is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Make sure your children do this, and encourage them to scrub for at least 15 seconds. Sometimes soap is not available, so maybe it would be wise to keep alcohol wipes or hand sanitizer gel with you throughout the day. Flu germs and other causes can live on surfaces like doorknobs and desks for many hours, so avoid touching your face if you have not recently washed your hands. The flu is highly contagious, so avoid contact with sick people. Also, be considerate to others and cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Keep tissues handy. Here is another situation where hand sanitizing gel or wipes can be very useful.

High Standards of Practice at Cinergy Health

Establishing standards of practice in conjunction with the insurance departments of many states has become one of Cinergy Health’s goals for the coming era of new health care policy in the United States. Hoping to create an atmosphere of easily accessible information for health care consumers, Cinergy Health has enumerated and put into practice several policies which it believes will have a significant benefit to consumers, and is pushing to see these standards incorporated universally.

Cinergy Health has already begun to adhere to the following standards of practice, and is looking forward to seeing these standards accepted nationwide:

1.    Clear advertising which explains the limits of limited benefit health care coverage in comparison to traditional types of health insurance policies, with a focus on the ads identifying which insurance companies are the underwriters are for the policy being purchased.

2.    Guaranteeing that insurance agents follow a script when explaining to customers about the health insurance policies that they are selling, insuring that the explanations are clear and easy to understand.

3.    The establishment of clear quality control guidelines which are enforced and adhered to.

4.    Improved training programs for insurance agents.

5.    Detailing the specifics of the monthly costs of the insurance policies so that consumers can more easily compare and contrast the various policies available, making the best possible educated choices.

Issues in Pregnancy on the Decline

Good news for pregnant women.  The number of women dying in pregnancy and childbirth has dropped by a third in the past two decades, according to a report from Unicef, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the United Nations Population Fund. Certainly, all health care plans such as Cinergy Health see this as encouraging news.

The number has decreased by a dramatic 34%.  While the progress is quite encouraging, it is still less than half of what would be needed to achieve the Millennium Development Goal which is set at a 75% reduction by 2015.

The decline is explained by the more effective measures being taken in countries with the greatest risks.  In these countries, they are training more midwives and strengthening hospitals and health centers to assist pregnant women.  The report showed that women in developing countries are 36 times more at risk of dying from a pregnancy-related complication than is a woman in a developed country.
