Cinergy Health Examines Longevity Study

According to a recently done longevity study, the United States is losing ground as compared to other developed countries in the life expectancy statistics for their aging population.  The report, from the National Research Council, which is a part of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, reports that for the past 25 years life expectancy in the U.S for people age 50 has indeed increased, but more slowly than in almost all of the other 21 countries included in the study.

These results are even more striking since the US spends more money on health care than any other country. As one of the authors of the study commented, “The results are surprising in terms of our self-concept.”

The reason for these less than hoped for life expectancy figures is obesity and high rates of smoking among Americans.  The co-author of the study, Samuel Preston of the University of Pennsylvania explained.

“We determined the most likely source of our shortfall is cigarette smoking, particularly the heavy amount of smoking done by American women,” he said.

“Obesity also appears to be important, but we are less certain of its role,” he added. “We are the heaviest country in the Western world.”

A new study, led by Andreas Holtermann and published in Heart magazine, shows that people who worked more than 45 hours a week had twice as much the risk of cardiovascular death than did those who worked normal hours or less than 40 hours a week.  For those who were in good shape and who worked out regularly, the long hours did not increase their risk levels.
